Cyprus · Month 12 of 12
Cyprus in
December.
Quietly festive — Christmas markets, mild days, the closest thing to a warm European Christmas.
The weather, honestly
December is Cyprus winter as the Cypriots understand it: 18°C in the day, 10°C at night, ten rain days, six hours of sun. The mountains see snow at altitude. Not a beach month, but a properly pleasant city-and-village month.
What to actually do
A surprisingly good winter break — warm enough for outdoor lunches most days, Christmas markets in every city, the Troodos villages dusted in occasional snow. Christmas Day itself is family-quiet (book restaurants in advance). New Year's Eve in Limassol is the biggest party of the year.
Events & festivals
- Christmas markets — Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos. Most weekends through December.
- Carol services — Every village church. Greek Orthodox traditions; visitors welcome.
- New Year's Eve — Limassol marina, Ayia Napa. Limassol is the biggest. Bookings essential.
Where to go
- Nicosia. Christmas market, old town, the most atmospheric city at this time of year.
- Troodos villages. Snow at altitude, fireplaces, slow Sundays.
- Limassol marina. Decorated, busy in a low-key way, mild walking nights.
What to pack
- Layers, including a real jacket
- A waterproof
- Walking shoes
- Smart casual for restaurants
Practical notes
Many beachfront tavernas closed. Cities fully open. Hotel prices at year low except for the Christmas/New Year week.
